It seem to be a kind of spiritual philosophy about life and it is based on the Islamic religion.Īs a Muslim sunnit I found it sometimes really difficult to understand the philosophical spiritual kind of expression that sufism use but none of less it was a interesting way for me to be introduced to sufism. Personally I don’t know anything about Sufism this is the first time I’m reading something about it and I’ve learned a lot of things. She is referring to a famous Sufi poet Rumi, his encounter with Shams of Tabriz a dervish and his forty rules of life and love. I was instantly swept by the words the author choose to express love in this novel.
The narrative shifts from the lead characters to a beggar, an innkeeper, a novice in the inn, a prostitute, a guard, Rumis wife, his children. The Forty Rules of Love is a novel within a novel, the first of which is Sweet Blasphemy, a novel about the companionship between Rumi and Shams written by Aziz Zahara - a self- proclaimed follower of Sufism and the second story line is that of Ella - a reader reviewing this work and corresponding with the author. Where should I start? 🤗 Overall, if I had to rate it, I'd give it 3.5 ⭐ and they are solely for Rumi and Shams. Whether it is about Rumi or Ella, their love seemed exceedingly selfish to me. What else baffled me was the idea of love and the contradictions in the stories.I didn't say anything about the modern day story that's running parallely because I did not like it, AT ALL.But for the sake of writing them all in one book, she forced them into sentences (Seemed like spoon feeding a kid 🙂). The 40 rules author talks about - We have read/heard all of them at some point of time and we all know them in our hearts.Had Rumi not lost Shams, he wouldn't have become a poet (And we wouldn't have his poems. Had Shams not challenged every aspect of the social order Rumi held, dear Rumi wouldn't have learned about the lives of common people. It talks about love and wisdom and the toll it takes in difficult experiences.We see the lives of Rumi and Shams through the eyes of people around them.
It portrays a multitude of characters and an intriguing way of story telling through many different narrators.I'd consider this book as a celebration of transformation of Rumi from a devoted spiritual scholar into a poet.
